STEM Education & Girls
- Girls tend to score higher than their male counterparts on math & science tests.
- Males tend to score higher than their female counterparts on self-assessments of math and science skills than their female counterparts.
- Although girls are receiving more bachelor degrees than males(60% go to women), they are not receiving nearly as many STEM degrees(30% go to women).
Science Identity:
- A students' science identity is their ability to visualize themselves in a science career field.
- Girls have a significantly lower science identity than males do.
- To rectify this, it is important to have girls interact with females in the STEM industry in informal settings.
So How Does This Connect to Active Learning??
- When students are in an active learning classroom, they are able to interact with guest speakers and scientists often.
- They are also able to actively participate in PBL lessons, which put them in the position of an engineer or scientist trying to solve a problem, so they can gain that personal experience as well.
